Realizan recorrido por a las áreas de intervención de la iniciativa
Miches, República Dominicana, 23 de abril de 2021.- Autoridades del Ministerio de Medio Ambiente & Recursos Naturales y la Unión Europea, realizaron una visita al proyecto “El Seibo Resiliente”, con el que busca rehabilitar 1,700 hectáreas de ecosistemas costeros y terrestres, perjudicados a causa de los efectos del cambio climático en esta provincia de El Seibo, municipio de Miches.
El proyecto ejecutado por la Dirección de Cambio Climático del Ministerio de Medio Ambiente e implementado por la Cooperación alemana para el desarrollo, GIZ, con apoyo económico de la Unión Europea y el Gobierno Alemán, contempla mejorar la preparación para la reducción de riesgos de desastres de El Seibo e incrementar el uso sostenible de sus ecosistemas, especialmente en el municipio de Miches.
El objetivo es aumentar la resiliencia de las comunidades y medios de vida ante los impactos del cambio climático, ya que esta zona es una de las más vulnerables a las amenazas climáticas actuales y futuras del país.
Dentro de las acciones contempladas para la ejecución del plan de trabajo se encuentran las jornadas de limpieza de cuencas, manglares y playas, campañas de sensibilización y capacitación en cambio climático y reducción de riesgos de desastres, la instalación de un sistema de alerta temprana para inundaciones, reciclaje, programas de restauración y conservación de la costa, conservación y protección de las tortugas que desovan en las playas del municipio, instalaciones de viveros de corales y manglares, además de crear alianzas públicas/privadas, entre otras.
La actividad contó con la presencia del Viceministro de Gestión Ambiental, Eduardo Julia, quien manifestó su apoyo al proyecto y explicó la importancia de desarrollar estrategias que ayuden a frenar los efectos del cambio climático en el país.
“Como todos sabemos estamos en un proceso nuevo de cambio climático, es algo que nunca se había visto afectar tanto en tan poco tiempo, y una de las estrategias para frenarlo es protegiendo el medio ambiente y tratando de que este nos apoye en nuestro proceso de adaptación”, expresó el viceministro.
Además, en la misma participó la coordinadora del proyecto por la GIZ, Friederike Eppen, junto a su equipo, del Ministerio de Medio Ambiente la Directora de Cambio Climático, Nathalie Flores, la Encargada Departamento de Adaptación, Esmeldy García, la representante de la Unión Europea, Sarah Soriano y la alcaldesa de Miches, Luz María Mercedes, la representante de The Nature Conservancy (TNC) Catherin Cattafesta, especialista en adaptación al cambio climático, Arnaldo San Roman de la Cruz Roja Dominicana, entre otras entidades.
La coordinadora del proyecto por la GIZ explicó que esta iniciativa busca beneficiar a la población rural y semiurbana, así como sectores económicos, entro de los que se encuentran la agricultura, la pesca, la ganadería, áreas protegidas y turismo, afectados por las amenazas del cambio climático como el aumento en el nivel del mar, las inundaciones, sequías y los efectos de tormentas. Así mismo, el proyecto busca crear las sinergias y acuerdo de colaboración de acción conjunta con TNC para la aplicación de medidas de adaptación basadas en ecosistemas.
Durante la visita, se realizó un recorrido por las zonas más afectadas del municipio, la zona costera de Miches y la comunidad Mameyes, que presenta una fuerte erosión costera, y el río Yeguada el cual representa grandes riesgos de inundación para las comunidades aledañas y presenta grandes problemas ambientales por algunas construcciones a orillas de los manglares y la contaminación.
Yonattan Mercado, Administrador de Áreas Protegidas de la oficina provincial del Ministerio de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales, dice que “se debería prestar atención inmediata para evitar la fragmentación y destrucción de los manglares, porque este ecosistema protege las mismas comunidades de las inundaciones”.
Sobre el proyecto
El proyecto “El Seibo Resiliente” es financiado por la Unión Europea a través de su programa Alianza Global para el Cambio Climático y co-financiado por el Ministerio Federal Alemán de Cooperación Económica y Desarrollo (BMZ) por un total de alrededor de 6 millones de euros. El mismo inició en marzo del 2020 y tendrá un periodo de duración de cinco años.
